Provenant de la collection de la famille BriceLe monde mystérieux de la céramique a exercé une fascination certaine sur des peintres et des sculpteurs de renoms jusqu'à les inciter à expérimenter le médium. Ce phénomène s'amplifia au XXe siècle, notamment au lendemain de la seconde guerre mondiale. Cette céramique dite «de peintre» devient un aspect marquant de la Modernité dans les années 1950. Si de grandes figures de l'art du XXe siècle comme Raoul Dufy ou Maurice de Vlaminck ont déjà depuis longtemps cédé à l'appel de la terre, découvrant avec ravissement l'intensité lumineuse et la profondeur sensuelle de la palette céramique, d'autres comme Marc Chagall ou Georges Braque vont succomber eux aussi à cette magie du feu. Si Pablo Picasso, dès 1947, donne l'exemple à Vallauris en libérant l'art de la céramique de ses académismes, peu d'artistes vont cependant aborder réellement le médium au-delà de la simple décoration. Fernand Léger, quant à lui, va ouvrir une voie tout à fait nouvelle en céramique. Se penchant sur la matérialité réceptive de l'argile, il va chercher à en explorer les potentialités pour donner corps à son vieux rêve, celui d'afficher la couleur sur les façades de la ville puis d'habiller les murs des cités pour y faire vivre la couleur en grandes dimensions. Il se lance alors dans une véritable aventure humaine, insolite même, puisqu'il associe son ancien disciple et ami de longue date, Roland Brice, à ses projets d'envergure. Céramiste, ce dernier va, de 1950 à 1955, avec une inventivité prodigieuse et grâce à une compréhension aigüe de la conception esthétique de son ancien maître, apporter la fameuse «troisième dimension» à l’œuvre peinte de Fernand Léger. Interprétant d'abord les motifs issus à la fois des gouaches datant des années 1930 et des tableaux de chevalet que Léger met à sa disposition, Roland Brice réalise des œuvres polychromes exceptionnelles aux couleurs éclatantes, d'abord en terre rouge puis en terre blanche émaillée. Ainsi, des fours de l'atelier, situé au creux de la cité potière de Biot, vont naître des bas-reliefs céramiques qui traduisent les avancées significatives de ce travail à quatre mains, hors du commun, où chacun sait ce qu'il apporte à l'autre. Si Léger procure la diversité plastique, Brice lui, s'en fait l'interprète et en concrétise les projets avec talent. Plein d'audace, Léger corrige les reliefs, retouche les aplats, rectifie les formes, oppose les modelés aux traits puissants, les couleurs brillantes aux tons mats; Brice assure la réalisation des compositions aux effets ainsi contrastés, jouant sur les rapports de reliefs et de formes. Durant ces années exaltantes, Léger et Brice se confrontent sans relâche à la matière. Le céramiste se consacre aux techniques, à l'émaillage, aux cuissons. L'association des deux artistes est sans commune mesure à d'autres collaborations artistiques de ce type dans l'histoire de la céramique et les pièces présentées lors de cette vente témoignent merveilleusement du fait que l'épreuve du feu n'éternise pas seulement la couleur mais perpétue aussi l’œuvre des hommes qui l'ont fait naître.Rodolphe CosimiCritique d'art et biographe de Roland Briceaoût 2016The mysterious world of ceramics has held such fascination for renowned painters and sculptors as to incite them to experiment with the medium. This became particularly true in the 20th century, especially in the aftermath of the Second World War. So-called 'artist' ceramics became a prominent milestone of Modernism in the 1950s. While some great figures of twentieth century art, like Raoul Dufy and Maurice de Vlaminck, had long since yielded to the call of clay, discovering with delight the luminous intensity and sensual depth of the ceramic artist's palette, others like Chagall and Braque would also later come to be lured by the magic of the fire. Although Picasso, from 1947, set a precedent in Vallauris, liberating ceramic art from its academicisms, only a few artists actually went on to exploit the medium to a degree beyond that of simple decoration. Fernand Léger, meanwhile, was opening up an entirely new path in ceramics. Focusing his attention on the receptive nature of clay as a material, he sought to explore its potential in order to fulfil an old dream of his: that of spreading colour on town building facades, then covering city walls, to make colours come alive on a large scale. He threw himself into a real adventure, which was both unique and human, because he made Roland Brice, a former student of his and long-time friend, his partner in his large-scale projects. With prodigious inventiveness and a keen understanding of his former teacher's aesthetic concepts, from 1950 to 1955, Brice, a ceramist, brought the famous 'third dimension' to Fernand Léger's painted works. Roland Brice began by interpreting the patterns from both the 1930s gouaches and the easel paintings that Léger had made available to him. He then produced remarkable polychrome works in vivid colours, first in red clay, then in glazed white clay. Thus, from the kilns of the studio located in the valley of the pottery centre of Biot, came ceramic reliefs reflecting the significant progress of the work being done by the two men, unusual in that each partner knew what he was bringing to the other. With Léger providing the plastic diversity, Brice gave voice to it, bringing the projects to fruition with skill. With spirit of bold innovation, Léger made adjustments to the reliefs, touching up flat areas, moulding shapes, contrasting contours with strong lines, and bright colours with matt tones; Brice executed the compositions, with their contrasting effects that played on the balance between reliefs and shapes. During those exciting years, Léger and Brice worked tirelessly on their material. The ceramist devoted himself to techniques, enamelling, firings. The partnership between the two artists was unlike any other artistic collaboration of this type in the history of ceramics, and the pieces presented at this auction illustrate perfectly that the test of fire has not only immortalised the colours, but is also keeping alive the work conceived by the two men.Rodolphe Cosimi, Art critic and biographer of Roland BriceAugust 2016
