«J'avais vu une exposition de Buren au CAPC de Bordeaux, que j'avais trouvée magnifique… Dans une petite salle, étaient montrées les œuvres des années soixante: les Buren matissiens qui m'avaient particulièrement frappé. C'est pourquoi … j’avais demandé si Buren accepterait de montrer à Renn Espace ses premiers travaux, avant qu'il ne trouve la radicalité de ses bandes de tissus verticales que tout le monde connait. C'est ainsi que les Buren matissiens furent exposes après les photos de Sugimoto.»
