H.M. BORGES
Henrique Menezes Borges founded the H.M. Borges Madeira firm in 1877, managing it until his death in 1916. According to Borges family lore, H.M. owned five ancient Madeiras:

Sercial 1810
Bual 1780
Terrantez 1760
Pather 1720

H.M. refused to sell these wines, preserving them as “family wines” to be passed down to his children. Little is known of their history prior to H.M.’s purchase of the wines in barrel at the start of the 20th century. One of H.M.’s sons, Joao Maria, followed his father’s example of refusing to sell these wines. In the early 1930’s he transferred the five wines from barrel to demi-john, where they remained until his death in 1989. On February 13 1989 the wines were bottled from demi-john by H.M.Borges personnel in the presence of the Borges family. Each bottle was given a wax capsule embossed with the letter “B” and a simple handwritten white label with the name of the wine and the initials HMB. Each of Joao Maria Borges’ six children inherited 47 or 48 bottles, representing an equitable distribution of the five wines.

This bottle of 1720 Pather was part of the inheritance of Joao Maria’s son Henrique Borges who later had it stencilled, recorked and rewaxed with plain black wax- by the Borges firm. Henrique stored this bottle for 18 years in his Funchal home before he sold it in February 2007 to its current owner. .
