Lot Essay
Depicting two monumental female figures in a range of media, including watercolour, ink and paper collage, Deux femmes et buste was executed by Le Corbusier in April 1959, while on a trip to Chandigarh in northern India, the city that he designed entirely.
Le Corbusier had first been approached to build a new city by the Indian government in 1950. Providing him the opportunity to realise his influential ideas on urban planning and modern architecture, he agreed to this project, and over the course of the following decade, designed everything from the government buildings and the majority of the housing, to the large public sculptures, and even the furniture that filled the spaces he had designed.
The city is a monument to Le Corbusier’s pioneering form of modernist architecture, and features some of the most important buildings of the 20th Century. While Le Corbusier did not manage to move out to India to oversee his project, he made numerous trips from Paris to Chandigarh and while there, continued alongside his architectural planning and design to paint and draw, creating works such as the present lot.
