Lot Essay

The Arbeitsgruppe Alfons Walde (Gert Ammann, Peter Konzert, Carl Kraus, Michael Walde-Berger) has confirmed the authenticity of this work, which will be included in the forthcoming Alfons Walde Werkverzeichnis.

Farmhouses, women in traditional Austrian costumes, snowfields, the mountains and bright blue skies – Alfons Walde’s most popular motifs are all featured in Spätwinter.

The composition shows a village scene in a modern close up, with the farm houses on the right and left hand side of the picture being cut off. This immediacy is enhanced by the three farmer’s wives in the foreground. Walking and chatting along, they add movement and energy to the composition. Alfons Walde’s signature sharp lines and strong contrast are particularly attractive in this picture, which the snow renders into a distinctive Tyrolean winter idyll.
