Odette Frizac was a cousin of Maurice Denis and the daughter of Mr and Mrs Georges Jouin who lived in Alençon, in Normandy, where Denis's parents also originated. This painting was made over two or three sessions and was offered by Denis as a wedding gift for the marriage of Odette to Doctor Pierre Frizac who practiced at Le Vésinet, a town near Saint-Germain-en-Laye where Denis lived.
