Collection Evelyn et Jerome OremlandLa maison californienne d’Evie et Jerry Oremland était le reflet de leurs multiples intérêts. Ils vivaient entourés de leur collection, bâtie au fil de leur vie commune, témoignage de leurs passions diverses: des dessins des grands maîtres aux huiles modernes, des Antiquités grecques aux sculptures contemporaines, du mobilier Régence à l’argenterie d’époque géorgienne, en passant par les tapis persans. Le fil conducteur de leur collection était leur fascination pour l’humanité, de la reconnaissance de l’universalité de notre histoire partagée, à la plongée dans la psychologie de l’individu.Evelyn Oremland (1932-1996) fut pionnière dans le domaine de la vie des enfants et auteur d’ouvrages sur le sujet, elle fonda le Child Life Program à la faculté de Mills College à Oakland, où un jardin commémore son dévouement à ses étudiants. Son amour des enfants et de la famille se reflétait dans son goût pour l’art et son intérêt particulier pour les peuples du monde.Jerome Oremland (1929-2016) exerça à partir des années 1950 comme psychanalyste freudien à San Francisco et acquit une notoriété internationale. Il fut chef du service de psychiatrie du Children's Hospital à San Francisco pendant quinze ans, fonda de nombreuses organisations psychanalytiques et donna des conférences à travers les États-Unis et l’Europe. Il écrivit des ouvrages de psychanalyse sur la créativité, notamment sur Michel-Ange. Plus récemment, il s’était tourné vers la fiction, écrivant sur Le Caravage, Venise et le voyage. Il était particulièrement fier d’un accomplissement récent: le New Yorker, magazine dont il fut pendant soixante-quinze ans le fidèle abonné, lui décerna son prix annuel du récit de voyage — il s’agissait d’un texte sur Evie.Entering Evie and Jerry Oremland’s home in Sausalito, California, was entering into their personalities. Their collection, built over a lifetime together, is a testament to their varied interests: from Old Master drawings to modern oils, from Greek antiquities to contemporary sculptures, from Régence furniture and Georgian silver to Persian carpets bought at the bazaars of Teheran in the 60’s. The thread unifying their collection was their fascination with humanity, from appreciating the universality of our shared history to diving down into the psychology of the individual.Evelyn Oremland (1932-1996) was a pioneer in Child Life and an author of works on the subject, she founded the Child Life Program at Mills College in Oakland, where a memorial garden commemorates her dedication to the school and to her students. Her love of children and the family was reflected in her taste in art and her particular interest in peoples of the world.Jerome Oremland (1929-2016) practiced as a Freudian psychoanalyst achieving local and international renown. He served as Chief of Psychiatry of Children’s Hospital in San Francisco for fifteen years, founded and animated many psychoanalytic organizations, and he lectured widely in the United States and Europe. He wrote psychoanalytical books on creativity, notably on Michelangelo. In more recent years he took to fiction, writing about Caravaggio, Venice, and travel. He was particularly proud of a recent achievement: he won the annual travel writing award from the New Yorker, the magazine to which he subscribed faithfully for 75 years – it wasa piece about Evie.
