Lot Essay

It appears that Li Chen has started to play around with the character of mist/cloud in his Spiritual Journey Through the Great Ether series of 2012. In this particular work, the artist forges the cloud into an adorable little ball underneath. Li is particularly adept at presenting the relationships between objects of different size. The smoothness of the silver part and the power of the black material showcase both contrast and harmony, while the cloud offers sturdy support, so that even though floating in the air the character is safe and at ease.

This work conveys to the viewer a sense of "yearning". When we remember a lost loved one, our minds and emotions become the most pure and clear. One day on a visit to see his brother's newborn baby, the artist found striking similarities between the baby and his own father. At that moment, he seemed to witness the spiritual strength of longing in reincarnations. "Sky"- a pure and unadulterated expression, was thus born.
