Lot Essay

Reference 1601 is among the most elegant and classic timepieces by Rolex. Defined by the ribbed bezel, it was launched in 1959.

The present piece is an exquisite specimen in pink gold, with matching pink gold bracelet. The bracelet is most probably original to the watch: it is stamped 2.68, indicating a production date of the second quarter of 1968, perfectly matching the late 1967/early 1968 production date implied in the serial number of then watch.

The defining feature of this piece is its “wide boy” dial, easily recognizable by the particular style of hands and numerals. The numerals are wider than normal (hence the nickname) and both numerals and hands have a peculiar two-tone, three-dimensional finish: a sandblasted finished groove in the center, and raised polished borders on the sides. The wide boy dial dramatically alters the look of the timepiece, granting it a very 1970s vibe. The present example is offered in extremely appealing condition of both case and dial.
