An icon among diver’s timepieces, the double red SeaDweller is defined by the two red lines of text at 6 o’ clock, instead of full white graphics. This apparently simple difference has instead an enormous impact on the entire look of the dial, making it sportier but at the same time adding also a bit of levity and playfulness to the ensemble. Interestingly, a Single Red Sea-Dweller model was introduced this year to Rolex collection, a testament to how appealing a touch of red on the dial is to collectors.
Four production versions of this dial are known, in addition to some early prototype variations and later service examples. The present watch features the final version of the double red dial, the “Mark IV”. It is most easily distinguished by the grainy texture of the red designations, which appear at high magnification as if it were made of many small dots. Other characteristic traits are the much bigger fonts of the first line of text compared to the second, and a very well defined, clear crown with a large opening at the base.
The present specimen of this legendary model is offered in absolutely excellent condition. Not only the dial appears to be untouched, the luminous material now sporting an extremely attractive light vanilla tonality, but the case as well is remarkably well-preserved, with full lugs featuring pinholes well distanced for the edges.
