Nu se lavant addresses a theme that fascinated Bonnard for most of his career: intimate moments of domestic life. Sensuous and voyeuristic, Nu se lavant evokes the comforting, homely interior of a contemporary house and a daily, familiar activity. Bonnard would explore this subject throughout his career in various media—Nu à la toilette (Dauberville, no. 489; fig. 1) is a wonderfully sensuous painting of the same subject.
