FROM A PRIVATE FRENCH COLLECTION (LOTS 1274-1279)Mr. du Gardin worked in the wine and cosmetic business in China in the 1940s, and was captivated by the Chinese art and culture. During his time in China, he would attend salons hosted by other French people in China and was introduced to and acquired many paintings by artists such as Xu Beihong (1895-1953), Huang Binhong (1864-1955), Qi Baishi (1863-1957), Liu Haisu (1896-1994) and Lin Fengmian (1900-1991). In each of the paintings, he would write on the mounting or the back, recording its provenance.
