NOTE:
The recipient of this painting was Ai Qing (1910-1996), one of the finest modern Chinese poets. He studied in Hangzhou West Lake Art School in 1928 and under the advice of principal Lin Fengmian he went to further his studies in France. After returing to China, he joined the Chinese Communist Party and held important positions in the cultural committee. In 1979, he was vice-chairman of the Chinese Writers Association. Artist Ai Xuan and Ai Wei Wei are both his sons.
