LOTS 1426-1435IMPORTANT PAINTINGS FROM DR. ANDREW CHEW, FOUNDER OF THE HONG-GAH MUSEUMThe Hong Gah Museum was established in 1999 as one of the first private art museums in Taiwan. The founder, Dr. Andrew Chew, graduated from the National Chiao Tung University, and began his career at Philco, before establishing his own electronics company Unitron in 1969, nurturing and bringing together technology innovators of the time and establishing Taiwan as an electronics industrial hub. As Mr. Chew’s business grew in the 1980’s, his demanding schedule and work in Eastern Europe fostered his passion towards the arts as a relaxing hobby. He began to collect Chinese art, starting with Zhang Daqian, Pu Ru and Huang Junbi, demonstrated in the current selection of works, such as Zhang’s Court Lady and White Parrot (Lot 1427). Mr. Chew continued to collect artists such as Lin Fengmian, Xu Beihong and Huang Binhong.Mr. Chew embarked on his pursuit for Taiwan Contemporary art in the early 1990’s, through the introduction of gallery friends, investing in galleries as well as establishing the parameters of “agents” for artists, as well as collecting important works to add to his collection, so much so that his collection of Taiwan oil works is perhaps a microcosm of Taiwan’s art history. In addition to paintings, Mr. Chew amassed a large collection of sculpture and over 500 pieces of embroidery. In 1990, Dr. Chew established the Chew Culture Foundation, and in 1999, set up the Hong Gah Museum, named in memory of his father, both to promote Taiwanese art in the form events, exhibitions, lectures and tours.
