Lot Essay

Hal Opperman (J.B. Oudry 1686-1755, London, 1983) dates most of Oudry's bird studies to the early 1730s, since in 1734 the artist was appointed director of the Beauvais Tapestry and had access to animal studies by Pieter Boel and Charles Le Brun that were conserved in the local manufacture.
