Lot Essay

In excellent overall condition, the present timepiece is a very rare and highly attractive example of the Rolex reference 1665. Offered with its box and Rolex warranty, a rarity in itself, the beauty of the timepiece is emphasized through its magnificent dial of attractive tropicalized brown color and with the highly coveted ‘Double Red’ signature. In excellent overall condition, the wristwatch is built with a case back not only matching the reference number 1665, but stamped I. 72 indicating that the wristwatch was built in the first part of 1972, and with the final three digits of the serial number.

The reference 1665 was the first timepiece designed for use in saturation diving. It was fitted with a Rolex patent valve in the band and guaranteed waterproof to 610 meters depth. The valve was first developed on the Submariner model and allows helium and other gases to escape, enabling the watch to stand compression.
