Lot Essay

Harold Harvey trained under Norman Garstin and in the 1890s at the Académie Julian in Paris. He was one of the few Newlyn School painters who was a native Cornishman. His early work was inspired by Garstin and Stanhope Forbes but over time his palette brightened and showed a shift away from the rural naturalism of the early Newlyn School towards a more Impressionist style.

We are grateful to Peter Risdon for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
