chiaroscuro woodcut printed from three blocks in black, yellow and green, circa 1597-1600, on laid paper, watermark Coat-of-Arms surmounted by Caduceus (Briquet 5516, dated Amsterdam 1600), a very good impression of this rare print, Bialler’s and New Hollstein's variant IIa (of two), the colours quite fresh and strong, trimmed to or just inside the borderline, the upper corners slightly disturbed due to hinges on the reverse, otherwise in good condition
Sheet 109 x 144 mm.
Provenance
Baron Charles Marochetti (1805-1867), Paris and London (Lugt 392); probably his posthumous sale, Sotheby's, London, 31 March 1868 (and following days), lot 508 ('Figures and Landscapes, by Goltzius') (£0-7; to Rospilly).
