Paper has to be alive and choppy. Canvas work also refers to humidity. It is like a pulse and a breath. The picture thus moves choppily. The final result is not the target of my work but to present the process of how it is done.
CHUNG SANG-HWA
Born in Yeongdeok, Korea in 1932, Chung Sang-Hwa studied oil painting at the Seoul National University before engaging with various art circles in Paris and Japan between the 1960s and 1990s. When Chung moved back to Korea in 1992, he was already a very established and prominent artist of the Dansaekhwa movement (Korean monochrome painting) and has remained active and prolific until now. His acrylic on canvas Untitled 12-3-12 (Lot 644) is a perfect example of his signature technique, consisting of the superposition of paint layers gradually ripped off to create a geometrical and repetitive structure. Years of perfecting the technique are reflected in this work, fully rendering a sense of depth and meditative.
