Reference 3970 was in production from 1986 until 2004 when it was replaced by reference 5970. The reference 3970 came with a solid snap on case back. Shortly after, the 3970 was fitted with a solid screw back, making it waterproof and this model became known as the 3970E such as the present watch (E stands for etanche or waterproof). Following the lineage of perpetual chronograph timepieces, the 3970 is the heir to the 2499 and the 1518, which share its unmistakable case construction characterized by its sculpted lugs.

While production of the reference 3970 may have ended only thirteen years ago, these modern yet classic perpetual calendar chronographs have become a must-have for the discerning collector of complicated wristwatches. Dating to the third and final series of this reference, the present watch represents a a time in the history of Patek Philippe that cannot be recreated. Fresh to market and never before been offered in public, this sophisticated timepiece is a treasure for its historical relevance to the firm's production, its complex movement and its stunning and original aesthetic.
