Le présent portrait de sa femme par Henri Fantin-Latour faisait auparavant partie de la collection de Sir Michael Ernest Sadler. Sadler était un historien, pédagogue et administrateur d’université britannique. Alors qu’il occupe le poste de recteur de l’université de Leeds, il devient président du Leeds Art Club, groupe culturel moderniste d’avant-garde. Le Club attire artistes, intellectuels, pédagogues et écrivains radicaux. Usant de ses liens personnels avec Wassily Kandinsky à Munich, Sadler constitue une remarquable collection d'œuvres d’art expressionniste et expressionniste abstrait. Outre la possession de la peinture abstraite Fragment pour Composition VII de Kandinsky, l’une des acquisitions les plus impressionnantes de Sadler est sans nul doute celle de la célèbre peinture Vision après le Sermon de Paul Gauguin, désormais exposée à la National Gallery of Scotland à Édimbourg.
The present portrait of his wife by Henri Fantin-Latour was formely in Sir Michael Ernest Sadler’s collection. Sadler was a British historian, educationalist and university administrator. It was whilst working as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leeds that he became President of the avant-garde modernist cultural group the Leeds Arts Club. The Club was an important meeting ground forradical artists, thinkers, educationalists and writers. Using his personal links with Wassily Kandinsky in Munich, Sadler built up a remarkable collection of expressionist and abstract expressionist art. As well as owning Kandinsky's abstract painting Fragment for Composition VII, without doubt Sadler's most impressive acquisition was Paul Gauguin's celebrated painting,Vision après le Sermon, now housed in the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh.
