Rarely found at auction, this rare, well preserved and very attractive example of the famous Girard-Perregaux three golden bridge chronometer watch is offered complete with numbered original box and Bulletin de Marche.
It was tested from 20th February to 3rd April 1899 in six positions after which it is recorded that the watch had an average going variation of +- 0.76 seconds, weekly variation of 0.74 seconds, in various positions between + 1.97 and – 4.86 seconds and difference over the various extremes of going 7.9 seconds.
The Girard-Perregaux three golden bridge movement is one of the most instantly recognizable and most attractive ever created. Developed by Constant Girard by 1860, the design of three parallel bridges securing the barrel, centre wheel and balance wheel was revolutionary at the time combining as it does both precision watchmaking and aesthetics.
La Esmeralda - Hauser Zivy & Cie.
Hauser Zivy & Cie. was founded by Mr. Hauser and Mr. Zivy, owners of "La Esmeralda", the most important jewellers in Mexico City during the second half of the 19th century. Besides fine watches the firm was also selling jewellery, musical boxes and works of art. In addition they were the agents of the silversmith Christofle and the glass manufacturer Baccarat. The building housing "La Esmeralda" at Calle de Francisco I. Madero is still today a historical landmark and considered one of Mexico City's finest examples for illustrating the influence of European architects at the turn of the 19th century.
Another three golden bridge watch signed La Esmeralda was owned by the President of Mexico and is now in the Girard-Perregaux Museum.
