Lot Essay
Iconic and very rare, the present timepiece is unkown to the auction market and a highly appealing example of Patek Philippe’s celebrated reference 130. Part of the early chronographs of the model, it features a superb two-tone silvered sector or aviator dial, together with the stainless steel case considered as being amongst the most desirable combinations for collectors. Made during a limited period of time only, these sector dials appeared on chronographs in the mid-1930s.
The captivating dial of the present ref. 130 does not show signs of cosmetic enhancement, the hard enamel signature and scales are as raised as the demanding scholar would expect. The case has not been subject to careless polishing and impresses with its full proportions.
From the family of the original owner, this first series of the reference 130 in stainless steel represents a truly rare opportunity for collectors to acquire a highly attractive example of one of the most renowned and iconic chronographs made by Patek Philippe.
Reference 130
Reference 130, one of Patek Philippe's landmark models, was launched in 1934 and remained in production until the 1960s. Distinguished by its timeless "Calatrava" design, the model was available in different precious metals as well as in stainless steel.
It is interesting to note that the lugs of the stainless steel version are different from the yellow, pink or white gold ones. Their slightly thicker but shorter design gives the watch a rather tonneau-shaped design and a more sportive, robust and masculine look.
Examples of ref. 130 with sector dials are illustrated in Patek Philippe Steel Watches by John Goldberger, pp. 212-223. For other examples of this reference see Patek Philippe Museum – Patek Philippe Watches, Volume II, pp. 262-265.
