Lot Essay

While incorporating Minimalism’s vivid linearity and austere materials, there is nothing severe about this impactful, towering sculpture. Shapiro’s work transforms its surroundings into an emotional abyss through his use of materials–in this case electric blue auto paint on aluminum. The artist’s figure engages deeply with the ground, ready to spring up and out, as though answering a constant call to action. Displaying a strong center of gravity, each element is pulled by a seemingly opposing force. In effect, our perception of the work’s center of gravity is completely dismantled. To offset the kinetic energy inherent to the work, its density and composition act as anchors, trapping the figure within the halcyon days of an imagined childhood.
