Lot Essay

The present Tradition d'Excellence No. 2, one of Audemars Piguet’s finest and most complicated pieces is preserved in excellent condition, treated by its owner with all the care required for such a rare and important piece, a tour-de-force of high watchmaking.

This highly impressive platinum watch is housed in the famed Jules Audemars circular case. It features a two-hammer minute repeater of clear and melodic tone, a perpetual calendar with an unusual leap-year indication through an aperture unveiling one to four lines to represent the full leap year cycle visually balanced and enhanced by an oversized date indication. The dial combination including engine-turned pattern and Roman numerals confers on the watch a modern look whilst at the same time it is of unmistakable AP heritage.

Audemars Piguet introduced the Tradition of Excellence collection in 2000. The limited series of timepieces consists to date of five individual models with only 20 examples of each manufactured, all cased in platinum and fitted with a one minute tourbillon regulator. The present watch is the second model of the series. Each of the five models focuses on a particular horological feature and pays tribute to the craftsmanship of the original founders of Audemars Piguet who became masters in the art of producing complicated timepieces and thus establishing the finest tradition of Audemars Piguet for their successors. The Tradition of Excellence collection uses classical design elements to showcase high watchmaking complications to stunning effect.

Tradition d'Excellence No. 2 is described and illustrated in Audemars Piguet by François Chaille, Edition Flammarion, p.180-181.
