Lot Essay

The recipient of this painting is Shi Xianghe (1905-1954), native of Panyu, Guangdong; Shi studied to be an accountant and a financier. In the early 1920s, he enrolled in the Beijing Tongcai Business School and the China National University, and in 1935 was appointed branch manager of the Shanghai Bank of Communications. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, he held several key positions in different branch offices of the Bank of Communications of China in southern China and became the manager of Bank of Communications in Guangdong province. In 1947, he was appointed Deputy Manager of the Hong Kong branch of the Bank of Communications of China. During the course of his life, Shi made quite a number of influential and significant contributions to financial practices, education, and accounting in China.
