DING YANYONG (1902-1978)/HUANG YAO (1917-1987)/TUI SHENG (20TH CENTURY)
FROM A PRIVATE HONG KONG COLLECTION (LOTS 1413-1425)This Hong Kong collection comes from the former collection of Mr Xi Mu, a native of Lin Fengmian’s hometown of Meixian, Guangdong province. Lin’s paintings form the bulk of the collection, including pieces dedicated to his compatriots from Meixian such as his middle school teacher Liang Bocong. A work by Zhao Shao’ang dedicated to Lin Fengmian also demonstrates the affinity between the artists. Interestingly, all the works in this collection were produced in 1940s Chongqing, including numerous pieces by faculty from the National Academies of Fine Arts and Nanjing Central University Fine Art Department who had followed the Nationalist government’s retreat to Sichuan. Lin Fengmian, Pan Tianshou, Li Keran, Ding Yanyong, Xu Beihong and Zhao Shao’ang are all represented in the collection, alongside key members of the Republican Government, such as Zou Lu and Liang Hancao. The collection offers an intimate portrait of the close artistic exchange between artists and government officials gathered in wartime Chongqing, recorded in verse, calligraphy and painting.
