Lot Essay

Incorporating an annual calendar and dual time function, the Sky-Dweller is among the most complicated watches made by Rolex, and it is one of the very few forays into complicated timepieces for the company, known chiefly for sport and tool watches such as the Daytona or the Milgauss. Of particular ingenuity is the so-called “Ring Command” bezel: it can be turned to four positions, each one respectively selecting a different function for the crown: time setting, second time zone setting, calendar setting, and neutral. Few Rolex timepieces can be compared to the Sky-Dweller for mechanical complexity: the modern regatta chronograph Yacht-master II, the vintage split-second pieces, and the vintage triple calendar with moon phases watches. It was launched in 2012.
