A PAINTED STUCCO FIGURE OF A LUOHAN
17TH-18TH CENTURY
The figure is shown seated cross-legged on a wood and stucco stepped plinth. He wears a priest's patchwork outer robe decorated in raised gesso with a large lotus medallion and smaller lotus flowers and clasped by a ring and a hook at the left shoulder, and a red under-robe decorated with various flowers and bats on the black borders, the robes falling in graceful folds between the legs and onto the wood and stucco throne. His face is modeled with a serene expression.
