The present watch is an early and rare example of Patek Philippe's reference 137, distinguished by its elegant and facetted body and facetted crystal, its elongated case with slightly curved back ergonomically fits on the wrist. It is believed to be one of only six examples of the model in yellow gold to have appeared in public to date.
Reference 137 was launched in 1933 and remained in production for only three years. The cases of ref. 137 and its sister ref. 138 were made by Markowsky, as identified in the case back of the present watch with the Geneva Master Case Maker Key 8. In very well preserved condition it features furthermore sharp gold marks as well as French importation hallmarks to the band, to the gold frame surrounding the movement and to the inside edge of the case back.
References 137 & 138 are illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber and Alan Banbery, 1997 edition, page 118 fig. 156 & page 119 fig. 165.
