Lot Essay

Often referred amongst collectors as the “Pre-Daytona”, the 6238 was produced from the early 1960s to 1967. Last Rolex chronograph with a monochromatic dial and non-graduated bezel, the timepiece is considered the precursor of the Rolex Daytona and enjoys growing popularity amongst enthusiasts of the brand. With approximately 3,600 examples produced, the timepieces were cased in stainless steel, 14K and 18K gold and housed a Valjoux movement. Already bearing some of the traits of its successor, the present example features a highly attractive dial with a layout similar to the reference 6239. The caliber 72B corresponds with the serial number featured on the case, which itself bears all the attributes of some of its future iterations.
