Lot Essay

The property of the original owner, the present timepiece is a very attractive example of the reference 6239. The original Rolex Guarantee and other the documents accompanying the chronograph are testimony to the attention and care devoted to the watch, keeping the multiple service receipts as well as its original box.

With a very attractive sunburst silver dial with black sunken subsidiary registers, the wristwatch features a very well preserved case of strong proportions. A highly coveted reference, the importance of the chronograph is emphasized through its 71N end links, sought-after by the most intricate collectors due to their tri-dimensional construction.

Launched in 1963, the Rolex Cosmograph reference 6239 was named following the fervor surrounding outer space travel. Later bearing the inscription Daytona, due to Rolex’s involvement with the celebrated International Speedway, the popularity of the chronograph soared throughout the years, leading it to become an icon and source of great fascination.

Succeeding the Rolex reference 6238, the 6239 differed through its metallic bezel with engraved tachometer scale enhancing the legibility of the bi-color dial. Built with two push down chronograph buttons, the timepiece was assembled with the reliable Valjoux 72B mechanism, and available in stainless steel, 14 or 18 karat gold.

An example of great quality, the present wristwatch represents a rare occasion for collectors to obtain an example of the iconic chronograph with its original documents.
