Lot Essay

The present work depicts Cooper Lake in Woodstock, New York.

In 1949, following summers spent in Gloucester, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont and California and elsewhere, Milton Avery, his wife Sally and daughter March began spending the warmer months in Woodstock. Upstate, Avery set up a studio where he painted his Catskill surroundings in his classic abstracted aesthetic. Lake in the Mountains is bold in its modern and minimalist interpretation of New York's natural beauty.
