Lot Essay

Ben Nicholson exhibited five works in the 1932 exhibition at Abdy & Co.; three of these (catalogue numbers 36, 37 and 40) were titled Scheme for a painting No. 1; Scheme for a painting No. 2 and Scheme for a painting No. 3. A photograph of the present drawing exists with the following inscription by Ben Nicholson circa 1960 on the reverse, ‘Nicholson of Charles ! Trafalgar 1932-3 [sic] Drawn from centre of road when policeman held up traffic looked as if we were holding up much of London traffic so that I could make this dwg’.
