Lot Essay

In what can only be described as horological overkill, Greubel Forsey has harnessed its entire technical capability in watchmaking to create a watch that is breathtakingly innovative. Indeed, it is hard to find a watch more complicated than the Invention Piece 2, which has a movement consisting of an impressive 594 components, all housed into an unusual and quirky asymmetrical case.

Of immediate note, catching the eye, is the main feature of the piece – two double tourbillons presented top to bottom. Both the tourbillons feature two systems of dual carriages, improving the accuracy of the time measurement exponentially more than other tourbillons. To proudly exhibit this, the Invention Piece 2 displays an ‘open heart’ architecture, allowing each escapement to be viewed in its entirety. The time itself can be read at 5 o’clock, with hours and minutes being indicated by a red triangle and a rotating display. The seconds indicator is placed at 10 o’clock, adjacent to a power reserve indicator at 11 o’clock. On the case back, as is characteristic of Greubel Forsey’s most complicated pieces, there is a hand engraved personal message from the founders, which recounts the story and history behind the piece’s invention to the owner.

So complicated and time consuming are these pieces to create that they are incredibly limited in production. This particular edition of pink gold is limited to 11 pieces only, of which the present example is number 2.
