ZHANG DAQIAN (1899-1983)
IMPORTANT ZHANG DAQIAN PAINTINGS FROM A DISTINGUISHED NORTH AMERICAN COLLECTION (LOTS 1230-1233)“In the late 1980s, we began collecting 20th Century Chinese ink paintings. Our fascination with the master painters of that period led us very quickly to develop a passion for the paintings of Zhang Daqian. Our particular fascination with Zhang Daqian arose from the incredibly proficient technical brilliance of his paintings, but even more importantly the versatility of both his style and subject. There are few master painters during this period who made the journey from the most traditional of classic Chinese painting to the extraordinarily abstract splash ink style that he was famous for in his later years.”--Collectors’ statement

Lot Essay

Zizhang and Maowen are Zhang Daqian’s townsmen and in-laws Li Zizhang and wife. After Zhang Daqian relocated to São Paulo in 1954, he developed a deep friendship with Li Zizhang as the latter was the artist’s neighbour in Brazil. The marriage of the artist’s youngest daughter, Zhang Xinpei, and the son of the Li family, Li Xianjue, had brought the two families closer than ever. Zhang had gifted several high-quality paintings of his to Zizhang, Xinpei, and Xinpei’s daughter.
