Lot Essay

All works are dedicated to Guoquan, whose full name is Ma Guoquan, a famous modern scholar, epigrapher and seal carver (1931-2002). Ma started learning calligraphy and seal carving at the age of nine, and got acquainted with Feng Kanghou (1901-1983) at fifiteen. He graduated from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, where he studied with Rong Geng (1894-1983), a renowned logography scholar of classical Chinese. He later taught at his alma mater and Jinan University. Ma relocated to Hong Kong in 1979, and worked at the Ta Kung Pao, as well as the Chinese University of Hong Kong Research Centre as an adjunct researcher.
