PREVIOUSLY IN THE FAMILY COLLECTION OF THE ARTIST (LOTS 1283-1288)From May to August 1957, Fu Baoshi led a delegation of Chinese artists on an official visit to Eastern Europe, painting not only the spectacular mountain landscape of Czechoslovakia and Romania he journeyed through, but also scenes of Socialist construction and industry. New, fascinating sights – medieval European architecture, hydroelectric power stations, airplanes and a flotilla of naval fleets – provided unprecedented, fresh materials which Fu deftly articulated with his virtuoso brush. Rendered in an impressionistic manner with rich variations of ink and colour washes, Scenery of Sinaia is one of the finest pictures from the artist’s rare Eastern Europe folio: from a high vantage point, a white-walled, red-roofed railway station takes centre stage; in the distance, train tracks disappear into the verdant hills of Carpathian Mountains, where tall transmission towers are partially hidden by the dense fog. The heavy foliage sketched with dancing movements of the brush in the foreground draws the eye upwards to a raised viewing platform on which four figures stands. Colourfully dressed in red, green and blue, they enliven the rustic palette of pale ink and dark, forest green. Full of rustic charm and poetic idyll, Scenery of Sinaia is a strong testament to Fu Baoshi’s dedication to incorporating modernity in an expanded field of Chinese painting in the twentieth century.Previously in the collection of the artist’s family and presented at auction for the first time, the group of six Fu Baoshi paintings (Lots 1283-1288) comprises of rare landscape and figure paintings that offer invaluable, intimate insight into the artist’s working process and the development of his ever-evolving style.
