Lot Essay

The Royal Oak collection, one of Audemars Piguet's signature series, was introduced in 1972 and redefined the definition of a sports watch. The ground-breaking design with its octagonal shape, use of refined steel and distinctive screwed bezel radiates an air of sophisticated ruggedness. The aesthetic premise is history laden - the octagonal design is inspired by the portholes of the steadfast Royal Navy ships and its name is derived from the tree that once concealed King Charles II in his time of need. Hence this timepiece evokes notions of strength, trust and history.

In 1997, the impact of the Royal Oak was more than apparent. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the royal oak, Audemars Piguet launched an extremely rarefied series of timepieces. Produced only in 25 examples in stainless steel, 5 in yellow gold, 5 in pink gold and 10 example in platinum with a blue and salmon dial. It is also known that there’s one unique piece in 18k rose gold and 18k white gold created especially for the Sultan of Brunei.

The present timepiece is part of the 25 examples produced in stainless steel. Offered in pristine and excellent condition, the watch incorporate an automatic tourbillion as well as a winder incorporate at the case back.
