Consigned by the grandson of the first owner and fresh to the market the present ref. 6263 is an exceptionally well-preserved example of the celebrated model.
The unrestored dial features the rare Sigma symbol on either side of the “T Swiss T” designation and omits a red track or red Daytona designation. The symbol indicates that the baton numerals and hands on a dial were made of gold, in this case, white. The case has never been subject to careless polishing, displaying strong proportions and sharp edges, bezel and chronograph pushers are the correct version.
Reference 6263
Launched in the 1970s, reference 6263 is the sister of reference 6265. Inheriting attributes of reference 6240, the chronograph bears the “Oyster” designation on the upper half of its dial and is built with a black bezel graduated to 200 units per hour, screw down pushers, a screw back and screw down crown. With the upgraded mechanical Valjoux caliber 727, succeeding caliber 722-1, the model was made in steel, 14 and 18K gold.
For a note on the "Goute A Prior" or Sigma see “Rolex Daytona, a legend is born” by Carlo Pergola, Stefano Mazzariol, & Giovanni Doss, p. 82. An example of a reference 6263 with sigma dial is illustrated on p. 136.
