ROGER DUBUIS “Horloger Genevois”In the words of the Fondation Haute Horlogerie, Roger Dubuis is “more than a Manufacture, it is a world of its own. Beautiful mechanisms find their counterpart in baroque cases, conveyed in incredibly detailed, fantasy worlds. This is a world where exuberance rules and creativity reigns supreme. Roger Dubuis is an extravagant, rebellious, elegant brand, worthy of the finest in Haute Horlogerie, whose innovation is founded in respect for tradition and craftsmanship”.Roger Dubuis was born in 1938 in the Swiss canton of Vaud. He started his watchmaking career in the 1950s at Longines before moving to the high complications workshops at Patek Philippe, where he was to remain for 14 years. This was at a time when the majority of watchmaking was still done by hand and Roger became highly experienced in the making of some of the world’s most complicated and highly finished watches. After leaving Patek in the 1980s he set up his own watch restoration company in Geneva. During this period Roger Dubuis collaborated on the design and making of the famous Harry Winston Bi-Retrograde Perpetual calendar. The Roger Dubuis watch manufacture was founded with a partnership between Roger Dubuis himself and the businessman and watch designer Carlos Dias. By 1995, they had founded the “Société Genevoise des Montres”, later renamed Manufacture Roger Dubuis, and from 2001 the company was based at the purpose-built headquarters in Meyrin, Geneva.The story of Roger Dubuis is one of a magical combination of old-school traditional watchmaking and resolutely avant-garde design. From the beginning, exceptional quality in all aspects of production was the goal and in 1999, after four years of development, the company introduced the first movement calibres fully designed and developed in-house. The new in-house movements all met the standard of the Poinçon de Genève and in addition, from 2012, each watch has been tested and certified by the COSC, the official Swiss chronometer testing institute.Roger Dubuis watches encompass traditional materials in such as gold, diamonds, and titanium, as well as ultra-modern materials such as carbon and ceramic generally produced in small limited editions of 28, 88 or 288 pieces, all variations of the number 208 - Roger Dubuis’s registration number at the École d’Horlogerie de Genève. Due to the stunning designs, high complication and uncompromising quaity of their watches, the company quickly established itself in the world of fine watchmaking with the launch of its first two collections; Sympathie (see lot 2408) and Hommage. These highly successful models were followed by now famous models such as “Too Much”, “Much More”, “Follow Me”, “KingSquare” (see lot 2409) and in 2005 by the Excalibur collection fitted with an exclusive Tourbillon or double tourbillon movement which has become synonymous with the brand. In 2016, Roger Dubuis became wholly part of the Richemont group.The recent collections are inspired by four worlds: The Player (La Monégasque), the Warrior (Excalibur), and newcomers the Venturer (Pulsion, see lot 2411) and the Diva (Velvet).
