Knights of the Round Table
“Around this table, all in equality, will sit the most valiant knights. From this room, they will set out to seek challenges, to undo wrongs, to protect the weak, and to bring down the proud.”
Pushing the boundaries of design, this unique piece took an incredible two years to transform the ideas of the important Chinese collector into reality. Working closely with Roger Dubuis including visits to the Geneva manufactory through all the stages of its creation, this special order Excalibur Knights of the Round Table watch is quite different to the standard version of the model. In particular, certain special features were chosen by the client to enhance the beauty and practicality of the timepiece. Firstly, the case is uniquely made of bronze in place of gold to make the watch lighter to wear and the bronze will naturally improve in appearance as it ages. A screw down crown was fitted for water resistance and an additional rubber strap provided for aquatic pursuits. The red ring around the perimeter of the dial adds focus to draw the eye to the dial with its 12 engraved and sculpted 18k gold miniature knights as do the red and green enamel segments of the dial which are beloved colours to the Chinese and both complement the bronze case and instantly identify the watch as completely different to the production model.
The dial, requiring 45 hours of work to complete, depicts twelve knights standing at the famous Winchester Round Table. Each knight has his sword drawn, and pointed towards the centre rose. The knights are cast in 18k pink gold, by hand, and placed around the dial to function as hour markers. Each figure holds his sword slightly differently as Roger Dubuis wanted each individual knight to be considered as a unique piece.
This entirely unique special order watch has the following bespoke features that distinguish it from all other “Knights of the Round Table” watches:
The bronze case – in place of the usual pink gold, this bronze case is much lighter and considered by the owner to be more appropriate to the theme of Knights of the Round Table, furthermore, the owner believes that the continued oxidation of bronze over time only serves to improve and enhance the beauty of the watch day by day.
Screw down crown and extra rubber strap – to allow the owner to swim and dive whilst wearing the watch, the sea water helping to speed up the oxidation process of the bronze case.
Red outer ring – draws the eye to the dial.
Floor tile pattern under the knight figures – inspired by the Winchester Round Table and used for the dial of the Excalibur Knights of the Round Table 1st Edition, with the beige changed to red here as It is the preferred colour of many Chinese and demonstrates the owner’s attention to detail and to make the dial richer and more visually complete.
