Lot Essay

When first announced in 2012, Lange’s Zeitwerk Handwerkskunst met with such approbation and eager anticipation that the entire limited edition of 30 pieces was entirely sold out almost immediately. The present watch is number 19 of the edition.
Apart from the very impressive 41.9 mm. platinum case what immediately catches the eye is the simply beautiful hand-engraved dial textured using a technique called “tremblage” to provide the deep almost granular effect. The dials took around two weeks each to complete by hand with a special burin tool to make cuts in the surface one by one in randon different directions eventually creating a most unusual deep and rich effect.
The Zeitwerk movement is unique in being a triple jumping disc system whereby all the digits change instantaneously. The large subsidiary seconds is geared to the jumping time mechanism so that when the seconds hand reaches 60 the relevant disc(s) jump immediately and exactly. This revolutionary system is facilitated by the use of a 60-second remontoir to provide power to the display at one minute intervals. A remontoir is necessary due to the enormous amount of energy required to power the discs.
The Zeitwerk Handwerkskunst is one of Lange & Söhne’s most appreciated and coveted wristwatches, it conveys even at a glance the incredible quality and understated cool elegance that have become the benchmark of Lange & Söhne watches.
