Lot Essay

'I’d like to be able to use every kind of colour, all in one painting; to use a dirty grey, a black, and to make them sing with as much light as a cadmium red or yellow. Make them all go in one picture. I’d like to be able to use colour in all different sizes, qualities, relationships and surfaces – like a group of characters in a novel, interlocking with each other. They don’t have to be of equal intensity – just have their own place, their own strength' - John Hoyland
