Lot Essay

Hong Kong writer and artist Benny SY Li grew up in Shanghai and has previously served as the chief editor of the Ming Pao Newspaper Supplement. A self-taught artist who counts Chinese and European masters among his influences, Li incorporates a contemporary and idiosyncratic visual language in his painting. A combination of his genial humour, keen observation, and artistic courage, Crossing Thresholds encapsulates Li’s joyfulness — his fluid calligraphy and elaborate brushwork bring about a delightful and uplifting impression.
