L’émail à-jour également appelé "émail à fenestrage" ou "émail en vitrail" est une technique qui permet à la lumière de traverser l’émail, à la manière des vitraux. L’émail, déposé dans des alvéoles faites de fines cloisons d’or devient transparent après cuisson. Datant du Moyen-Age, puis tombé en désuétude, c’est à la seconde moitié du XIXème siècle que l’émail à-jour réapparait.A partir des années 1890, l’émail à-jour est repris par les bijoutiers de l’Art Nouveau qui développeront cette technique jusqu’à son plus haut niveau d’excellence. Window enamel, also referred to as 'fenestrage enamel' or 'enamel stained glass' is a technique that allows light to pass through enamel. The enamel, placed in alveoli made of thin gold panels, becomes transparent when heated. Dating from the Middle Ages, then fallen into disuse it is during the second half of the 19th century that the à-jour enamel reappeared. In the 1890s à-jour enamel was taken over by the Art Nouveau jewellers who elevated the technique to its highest level of excellence.
