While dated drawings from the late period of the Van Goyen's career are numerous (the most productive year being that of 1653, from which around250 drawings survive), early dated drawings are rather scarce. Beck lists only four drawings from 1634, the year in which this sheet was made (see Beck, op. cit., nos. 130-133, ill.).
