Lot Essay

The present timepiece is part of the highly coveted Rolex reference 6263. Arguably the most sought-after manual-wound chronographs of the manufacture.

Adding to the desirability of the timepiece, the dial has discolored over the years to a highly attractive chocolate brown colour, a process occurring in rare instances and resulting in fundamentally altering the aesthetic and collectible appeal of the timepiece. Carefully preserved, the timepiece features an attractive stainless steel case with period Rolex folded links bracelet stamped 3 71, indicating a production date in the third part of 1971, which could coincide with the production year of the timepiece. Furthermore, the case has never been subject to careless polishing, displaying strong proportions and sharp edges, bezel and chronograph pushers are the correct version.

Reference 6263
Launched in the 1970s, the reference 6263 is the sister reference of the 6265. Inheriting attributes of reference 6240, the chronograph bears the “Oyster” designation on the upper-half of its dial and is built with a black bezel graduated to 200 units per hour, screw-down pushers, a screw back and screw-down crown. With the upgraded mechanical Valjoux caliber 727, succeeding caliber 722-1, the wristwatch was made in steel, 14 and 18 karat gold and it is estimated that over a 20 year period, only 24,000 reference 6263 and 6265 were produced in stainless steel.
