Lot Essay

The original owner of this painting was a member of several cultural delegations of Czechoslovakia in China. Between 1957 and 1961, he was the cultural attaché of Czechoslovakia in China.
While in China, the owner met Qi Baishi and got the painting from the artist as a gift. Before the end of his diplomatic mission, he was awarded in 1960 a “Friendship Among Nations” medal by the Chairman of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China.
Since returning to his home country, the owner kept and displayed the painting in his home. The painting has remained in the family since the 1950s and was then passed on to the owner’s son.
