Lot Essay

This large ‘phoenix-tail’ vase is finely decorated in iron-red enamel, with a remarkable retention of the gilt details. For two vases of similar shape and size, but with a more standard design of leaf bands and flower sprays, in the Christiansborg Palace, Denmark, see O.V. Krog et al, Treasures from the Forbidden City and The Royal Danish Court, p. 603, no. 182.
